ENERGY SAVING TIPS
Don't overheat your home. Increasing the thermostat by
one degree can increase your costs by as much as 3
percent.
Turn off your appliances when you aren't using them --
particularly your computer.
Keep curtains closed. This prevents heat loss in the
winter and heat gain inside your home in the summer.
While compact fluorescent bulbs cost more than
conventional incandescent bulbs, they save energy and
last longer. Another plus for homeowners with high
ceilings -- you don't have to change them as often.
Window coverings, particularly heavy, lined curtains,
help reduce drafts. Even vinyl shades and mini-blinds
will help keep out cold air if they fit properly.
When shopping for new appliances or electronic
equipment, check out Energy Star products that use less
power and cut carbon dioxide emissions.
Wash only full loads when using your clothes washer and
dryer, and don't forget to clean your dryer lint trap
after each use.
Caulk around windows and weather strip around doors.
Fix defective plumbing and dripping faucets, which can
waste both water and electricity and drive up two
utility bills.
Wrap your water heater with a special water heater
blanket, especially if it's in an unheated part of your
home. This could save up to 10 percent on water heating
costs. |
